 This inquiry seeks to understand how the original form of writing in Mesopotamia—the small pictures and conventions protocuneiform— became cuneiform, a script that could not be read without acquiring neurological behavioral reorganizations understood today as literacy. The process is described involving changes realized, accumulated, distributed new users through in- teractions with concomitant incremental material writing. A related focuses on why numerical notations differ from other written signs. Crucially, signs instantiate their meaning, representational mode contrasts signification used represent non-numerical language which makes contiguous unwritten precursors, technologies like fingers, tallies, counters.
